Functional Skills English is about real-world skills — helping you become more confident with reading, writing and speaking in everyday life, at work, and in further learning. Whether you’re starting at Entry Level or aiming for Level 2, our courses are designed to support your goals at your own pace.
Our programme is employer-informed, meaning you’ll build the communication skills that matter most to hiring managers across every sector.

What You'll Learn
Entry Level
A welcoming starting point if you need to build or refresh your English skills.
You’ll learn to:
Read everyday texts and forms (e.g. letters, leaflets, notices)
Write short sentences and messages clearly
Recognise common words and spelling patterns
Use punctuation (full stops, question marks, capitals)
Speak clearly in one-to-one and group discussions
Ideal for learners with little experience or those returning to education.
Level 1
Take your skills up a level and apply them to more work-based or formal settings.
You’ll learn to:
Understand and respond to different types of texts
Plan, draft and write emails, letters, and short reports
Improve spelling, grammar and punctuation accuracy
Communicate confidently in interviews or presentations
This level is often required for apprenticeships and some job roles.
Level 2
Equivalent to a GCSE (Grade 4/C), this qualification is widely recognised by employers and training providers.
You’ll learn to:
Analyse and compare written texts
Write formal documents such as job applications, complaints, or reports
Speak effectively in structured discussions or presentations
Apply critical thinking when reading or writing
Level 2 is accepted by most colleges, employers, NHS roles, apprenticeships, and universities as a GCSE alternative.

Eligibility Criteria
This course is free if you:
Are aged 19+
Live in England
Do not currently hold a GCSE Grade 4 (C) or Level 2 equivalent in English
Meet the Adult Skills Fund criteria (unemployed or earning below £23,104 per year)
