Overcoming Barriers Through Determination and Commitment
Ben joined Skills-UK with a clear goal: to take a meaningful step toward building a stable and successful future within the construction industry. Enrolling on the CSCS Route to Construction course, Ben demonstrated exceptional commitment from the outset, quickly establishing himself as a focused and driven learner.

Throughout the programme, Ben’s dedication was evident not only in his attendance and attitude but also in his outstanding academic performance. He successfully completed his Level 1 Introduction to Health & Safety in a Construction Environment exam, achieving an impressive score of 38 out of 40. Remarkably, within just 24 hours of completing this qualification, Ben went on to sit his CSCS test, where he achieved an exceptional score of 49 out of 50. These results reflect both his determination and his ability to apply himself under pressure.
Ben's path to this achievement has not been straightforward. Having overcome a difficult childhood and significant personal challenges, he has shown remarkable resilience and determination to build a better future for himself and his family.
Now a devoted father of two, Ben is committed to providing the stability and opportunities he lacked growing up. His determination has been reflected throughout his learning journey.
Before joining Skills-UK, Ben completed Level 1 and Level 2 Plumbing qualifications and a Level 1 Multi-Trades qualification. Like many learners, his progress was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring him to restart part of his training. Rather than giving up, he returned to complete his studies, demonstrating the perseverance and commitment that have characterised his journey.
Ben has always demonstrated a proactive approach to developing his skills and gaining industry experience. Alongside his formal qualifications, he undertook voluntary work alongside a gas engineer, gaining valuable insight into the gas sector and further enhancing his practical understanding of the construction industry. Rather than waiting for opportunities to come to him, Ben actively sought out ways to learn, develop new skills, and build his experience. This commitment to personal and professional growth played an important role in helping him progress towards employment and continues to support his long-term career ambitions within the construction sector.
Ben's hard work and commitment have already begun to pay off. Following the successful completion of his CSCS qualifications, he secured employment through construction recruitment specialists Fawkes & Reece and is currently working on a temporary assignment with Harron Homes. This achievement marks another significant step forward in his journey, allowing him to gain valuable industry experience while continuing to build a brighter future for himself and his young family
Ben’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, determination, and personal growth. He has overcome profound personal and economic barriers to achieve success and continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to improving his future for both himself and his family. At Skills-UK, we are incredibly proud to have supported Ben, even in a small way, on his inspiring journey. He is a truly deserving candidate for recognition in an adult learning award, embodying the transformative impact of education and perseverance.
