Mark enrolled on the Skills Bootcamp with a clear objective: to formalise his existing experience and take the next step towards a long-term career in dementia care. Having previously worked as a hairdresser in care home environments, he had already gained exposure to the sector and completed qualifications in dementia care and medication administration. However, he wanted recognised training and updated digital competencies to strengthen his employability.

Mark’s commitment to the sector is deeply personal. He had provided full-time care for his grandmother during the final six months of her life, an experience that solidified his desire to work in specialist care settings. The Bootcamp offered him the opportunity to transform that lived experience into a professional pathway.
Throughout the programme, Mark enhanced his knowledge of care planning and medication management while also improving his digital skills — an increasingly vital requirement within modern care environments. The course helped him bridge the gap between informal caregiving and regulated practice, giving him greater professional credibility.
Speaking about the programme, Mark said:
“The entire course was great; I couldn’t say there was one particular bit that stood out because I thoroughly enjoyed every single aspect of it. It has given me the confidence to take my experience caring for my nan and my time working in care homes and turn it into a long-term career.”
Following completion of the Bootcamp, Mark feels equipped to transition fully into a care role and has two interviews booked in where he is hoping to demonstrate his newfound knowledge and secure employment. He now has ambitions to progress further within the sector, with aspirations of becoming a senior carer and eventually advancing into nursing.
