After many years working as an undertaker, Patricia found herself unemployed and wanting a change in direction from her previous career. During her time in the profession, she had developed a deep understanding of supporting families through loss. As she considered her next steps, she began reflecting on how she could make a different kind of impact.

Patricia recognised that she wanted to be more directly involved in caring for individuals during their final stages of life, which led her to explore opportunities within palliative care.

Although she brought valuable life experience and compassion, Patricia understood that moving into healthcare required formal training. She joined the Health and Social Care Skills Bootcamp delivered by Skills-UK to build her confidence, strengthen her professional knowledge, and demonstrate to employers that she was fully prepared for a role within this specialised area.

During the intensive programme, Patricia developed her understanding of safeguarding responsibilities, person centred care, accurate documentation, and safe medication practices. The structured learning environment helped her connect her previous experience with professional care standards, giving her clarity about her long-term ambitions. By the end of the course, she felt certain that palliative care was the direction she wanted to pursue.

Reflecting on her experience, Patricia shared:

I found the course very interesting, informative and didn’t think I would learn as much as I did. I particularly enjoyed the way Debbie and Yvette delivered the training; they made it fun to learn while maintaining a professional environment. I now have a job interview lined up with the Care Collection in Halifax, and this course has given me the confidence and belief that I will be successful in securing the role.”

The Bootcamp has provided Patricia with the reassurance and industry knowledge needed to move forward into employment with renewed purpose and focus. Her journey demonstrates how specialist training can help individuals channel previous life and work experience into meaningful healthcare careers.
